Saturday, July 27th

A BBQ restaurant doesn't seem like the ideal place for a vegan to eat, but Hempen Hill BBQ is one that actually tries and does well by vegetarians and vegans. After the long ride up to the restaurant, dreading being around all the meat, I immediately ordered an Iced Cold Flying Dog IPA upon being seated. Things started looking up...
the Side Salad that came with my entree was big, beautiful and fresh...
Mr. SVegetarian and I split some Hand-Cut Fries $4.99 which were perfectly cooked...
and I had the 'Smoked Tofu' $13.99 Smoked and Seasoned Tofu with Bell Peppers, Carrots, Onions, Broccoli on Rice Noodles with Spicy Thai Peanut-Chili Sauce.  Lo and behold! Awesome vegan food in a clean, spacious environment with great, friendly service. You would never guess you were in a BBQ place. It's a bit of a hike for us, but we'll be back for more.
Another fantastic CSA Tomato Sandwich for dinner...
Very rich Cookie Dough Ice Cream for dessert.
We've had tons of Butterflies around the yard this week for some reason. Here were two that were having an intense confab this afternoon in the corner of a soaking dust pan.
Tonight I tried to give the Pups some CSA Celery before bed time to see if they would enjoy it...
I'd say that they tried to make the best of it...
But there was a lot of waste.
More potential dining out tomorrow.

It has been my experience that BBQ joints are not veg-friendly, and outside of Austin - TX proved me correct in that thinking. Glad to know the Mid-Atlantic states can do it right.

Great shot of the butterflies! I've seen a few around here, but they are much quicker than I am.

Oh my! These pups are so cute. Poley is definitely less camera shy than Molly or Teddy! However, I'd say Molly had the most fun with the celery.

Those faces!!! I'm melting!! So adorable. Your critter pics are making my heart happy this week so I thank you for that :) And I'll figure out a way to get pics of Tyler and Eddie to their fans :)

I'm glad that the BBQ restaurant ended up being a great spot for you! The meal does look great and those fries look so perfect. Yum! And you know how I feel about that ice cream.

Beautiful pic of the butterflies!

Haha! The puppies with the celery are great! I suspect you had a bit of cleanup once they were "done" though.....
What a great meal for a bbq joint! The meatless monday sign looks promising too. I found a great smoked tofu at the grocery store by the brand "soy boy"

And another gorgeous dinner-wich there, what a good food day for you!

That's one terrific bbq restaurant! Your entree looks amazing. I'm craving it and have never even had it!

We haven't seen many butterflies around here, but have seen plenty of dragonflies and bees. I've been trying to get pictures of them with no luck so far.

The pups are adorable with the celery. Emma & Rowan would be very happy to come clean up what they don't want! They won't go to bed until they've had their bedtime celery. :)

Ha! I love that you let the dogs eat in bed and drool all over the place. Does mr. SV get the same allowance?
Flying Dog beers are great. Glad the meal was enjoyable too. Had you heard about the restaurant in a vegan context? What did mr. SV get? Why am I so concerned about mr. SV? I think it was the motorcycle shot.

Hey Now!!!!

Ingrid, BBQ restaurants are short sighted not to think about omnis who might want to eat out with veggie friends. Their lo$$.

VaVa, so no more Fun Fridays? No more Delilah? No more WF's hauls? No more workout plans? Annual Florida trips?

Unknown, it was a bit of a clean-up after the Celery experiment, but not the worst mess I've encountered. I'll keep an eye out for the Soy Boy Smoked Tofu, but so far, you seem to find products we don't have down here like the Pumpernickel Pretzels. Don't forget: Part 1 of The Bachelorette Finale tomorrow night.

Molly, I don't know why my Pups didn't take to the Celery. They wanted to like it or at least do something with it, but they didn't know what. Were it a roll of toilet paper or a kitty turd, there would be no question.

FF, our whole family eats all meals in bed. Try it sometime, it's nice. Yes, I'd heard about the BBQ restaurant in a vegan context before heading to it. Mr. SV got Pierogies and really enjoyed them, so no need for concern.

Hannah, I'm no Elnora Comstock!!! I'm totally Elinor Dashwood!!!
